Classics I’d Like to Read

Most of my experience with classical literature has been in an academic setting. This is a shame, because reading a book in class creates such a different type of reading experience than if you read it alone. There’s so much added discussion and insight you gain from reading a classic in school opposed to reading a book alone. As much as I loved reading in school and knowing I was getting everything I could out of the book, I think there’s something so special about reading a classic on your own and having your own reading of it. And then being able to re-read it years later and seeing what else you can experience from it. Admittedly, even with school, I have not read a large number of classics in my life. At school we never focused on the major classics, at University I only read a couple, and I’ve read even less on my own over the years. So today I want to discuss some of the classical literature that I really want to read. It’s unlikely I’ll …

Weekend Reads #9

Hello friends! How has your week been? Last weekend was a long weekend so I had from Friday-Tuesday off work and finally got a chance to hang out with some of my friends! However I’m back at it now and the night shifts are already beginning to take their toll. So this weekends plan is to relax. I want to sit down with a good book and a cup of tea and just relax. I am currently going through a bit of a tough time with the books I’m reading. My attention span is relatively shit at the moment so I’m kind of touch-and-go with most of my current reads. But without further ado, these are the books I am planning on reading this weekend! 1. A Darker Shade of Magic by V E Schwab. I started this book about a week ago and only made it to the third chapter, but my oh my am I already intrigued. I love Victoria’s writing style and the plot for this one sounds incredibly interesting – so I’d love to get …

16 Books I want to Read in 2016

TBR piles and I don’t usually get along. I can’t remember the last time that I looked back on a TBR and realised that hey, I read all of those books. It never happens. Ever. The TBR and I are not friends. However, after seeing a few people on booktube making videos about books that they want to read within the year, I realised maybe I could actually accomplish that. I mean, heck, it’s three hundred and sixty five days. If I can’t complete that kind of TBR, I think I might as well give up on the entire concept. So I’m giving myself a 2016 TBR. Most of these books have been pulled straight from my goodreads shelves. In 2015 I was very particular about which books made the cut onto my to-be-read shelf. I’m not sure why, but something about seeing over 30 books on there really intimidated me. So I only kept a select few on there at a time. Funnily enough – the ones I had on there never ended up being read. (See – …

Top Ten Fairytales + Retellings (4 I’ve read, 6 I want to read)

This is a weekly feature created by The Broke and the Bookish. You can find out more info here! I love fairytales. But for some reason, when I look at the list of fairy tales I have read I find that I haven’t actually read that many. It just so happens that in the last week or so I have been thinking about reading more fairytales, simply because I have been thinking more about the Rory Gilmore Reading Challenge (I have a post on this to come) and there’s quite a few fairytales included on the list! My ‘Read’ list is kind of measly because I’m literally just listing all the ones I have read. I clearly haven’t read many. So this week, I’ve decided to list my top five fairy tales (original and retold) that I have read, and the top five that are on my TBR list! Top 5 Read Fairytales and Fairytale retellings. 1. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer. This isn’t only one of my favourite fairytale retellings, it’s one of my favourite series of all time! …

Weekend Reads #6

This weekend I am actually travelling interstate for a holiday! I was originally going to see 5 Seconds of Summer play in Brisbane, Australia, however I’ve since sold my concert ticket and now I’m just taking myself on a little trip and going to see some family friends. While there are quite a few different shops and vegan restaurants I want to pop to while I am there, I also want to use the the trip as an excuse to just relax and get a bunch of reading done! So I thought it was appropriate to let you know what I was planning on reading! Cress by Marissa Meyer. I am currently reading the third book in the Lunar Chronicles which I have been putting off since it was published in February 2014. I think my main reason for putting this book off for so long was that I had to wait an entirety for the fourth and final book, however now that the release date for Winter is drawing closer, I saw it as a perfect opportunity to pick this …

Reading What I Own (Participating in #0by16 + why!)

Late last year I made the conscious decision not to buy books that I wasn’t intending on reading immediately. Luckily for me, a large amount of the online book community also made the same decision. 2015 seems to be the year of unhauls and TBR challenges such as 0by16, ProjectTBR. I love that people are so actively trying to lower their TBR and read more of what they own, because it’s inspiring me to stick to my promise of reading what I own! (In saying all this, if you want to have a big TBR I have absolutely zero issues with that!) What I really want to discuss here is #0by16 (Zero by 2016), a challenge hosted by a bunch of booktubers (who I will not name, but here’s the twitter page) where you aim to get your physical TBR down to 0 books before 2016 arrives. I’ll admit, when I first heard about this challenge at the end of 2014 I was almost desperate to join. I had spent the past month binge watching minimalism videos on YouTube, and …

WWW Wednesday – 10th June 2015

This is WWW Wednesday, a weekly feature revived by samannelizabeth, where you answer three questions: what are you currently reading, what did you recently finish reading, what do you think you’ll read next? So here we go! What are you currently reading?  I’m currently reading A Dance with Dragons by George R. R. Martin. I always tend to have a break between reading ASOIAF books, simply because they are so intimidating, however when I begin reading them again I realise how much I love the world and I wonder why I had a four month+ break in between. I love this series so much! Definitely one of my favourites, and so far this book is one of my favourites in the series as almost all my favourite characters happen to be featured in this! What did you recently finish reading? I highly, highly suggest that all fans of The Walking Dead television show pick up the comic series! While the shows on season break, it’s always great to get a nice dose of zombies! While I’m still not caught up in the comics …
