I Feel a Reading Slump Coming On…

It’s the feeling that all readers fear: not being able to read.

I’ve been lucky enough to avoid a major reading slump for over 12 months now. I usually am able to pick up a comic if I’m not into my novel, or fly through a few easy YA reads before diving back into whatever book I was struggling with – but not this time. Let me explain myself.

I work somewhere between 35 hours a week at my job. I also work exclusively overnights. I know this isn’t uncommon for some people, but as a 19 year old working in the fast food industry and also trying to have somewhat of a social life, I’m fucking exhausted. And reading kind of becomes the last thing on my mind when I can barely keep my eyes open long enough to make it to bed.

Basically, to sum it up: working overnights is slowly killing me.

While it might not be showing on my blog (because I schedule posts like crazy – oops!) I haven’t been able to get more than 30-40% through a book in over a month (minus one). I haven’t even been reading comics, which is a rarity to me.

I just can’t find my reading groove again. My last major reading slump lasted 4 months, so I’m hoping that doesn’t happen again this time!

So how do I plan on fighting this reading slump? I’m not sure! I think things will have to be trialled to see how they go. I’m going to try writing on my blog after breakfast and just before work (3-5pm) and instead of sitting on my laptop before bed I’m going to use that time to read (or at least try) ((5-7am).

I don’t know what I was hoping to get out of this post, but hopefully I can look back on this in a few weeks and know that I have overcome this and somewhat figured out how to balance reading, work and my social life.

If you have any pro-tips on overcoming a reading slump, let me know down below! All the help is needed! X

  1. YOU CAN DO THIS! One thing that helps me overcome these terrible reading slumpsis getting more involved in the book-lover community, especially on BookTube. There’s just something about hearing other people talk about their love for a book, that really excites me and makes me want to read more. Hope you find a way that works, too 💙
Also, I nominated you for The Keep It Fresh Award that I did last night. Feel free to check it our here: Hope you can find a way, too! 💙

    • I LOVE booktube! I have a channel myself (it’s lame) but I’ve been actively watching videos for 3+ years now it’s great! I need to dive back into some bookish blogs I reckon – gotta get this inspiration back!! Also thank you 🙂 I will let you know when I have a look!

  2. I feel you, my last reading slump lasted 3 months between September and the end of December! My problem is that I sort of welcome slumps, because I’d rather not read at all than read books and just hate them because I’m not into them. I tend to just focus on the things most important to me during slumps and wait it out, maybe by watching TV shows or movies instead of reading, so when I start reading again I enjoy it even more because I haven’t tried forcing myself to read. But then again that’s me, and I know some people can’t bear the thought of not reading! I hope you don’t have too bad a slump 🙂

    • Yes, I am definitely not forcing myself to read at the moment! NOT the right way to fight this feeling! 🙂 I realised this morning that a lot of this feeling probably also comes from the fact that I am trying to move out of home at the moment… ITS SO STRESSFUL LOOKING FOR SOMEWHERE TO RENT!
